Massachusetts Hockey is pleased to announce that we are accepting applications for our 2024 Phil Zona Sportsmanship Awards. This is a stipend award which is given on the basis of sportsmanship to use towards future higher education costs.

The Phil Zona Sportsmanship Awards has been established by Massachusetts Hockey to recognize and celebrate the principles of good sportsmanship epitomized by the spirit of respect, dignity, courtesy, responsible behavior and fair play, not only in sports, but in all of life’s endeavors.

Any graduating senior in high school or expected freshman scheduled to enroll in an institute beyond high school who is a current or former ice hockey player who played for a Massachusetts Hockey registered youth/girls'/women's hockey program(s) for at least 5 seasons (does not need to be consecutive 5 seasons).

Application and all its supplemental documentation must be submitted no later than April 10, 2024  at 11:59 p.m.

• Upload statement from each Massachusetts Hockey program/association (Youth/Boys/Girls/Women’s Ice Hockey) which you (the applicant) has participated in for a minimum of 5 years to be signed by the Association Registrar or President.
• USA Hockey Registration, Rosters, Bills/Receipts, MIAA High School Career Resume will not be accepted.
  • Download, fill out and upload school counselor certification form. Form is attached on the sportsmanship page: https://www.mahockey.org/sportsmanship
• Upload and attach a statement with focus on sportsmanship convincing the committee why you (the applicant) should receive the Sportsmanship Award.
• Statement should not exceed double spaced, 12-point font, two (2) letter sized pages.
• Two (2) letters of recommendation should be provided.
  • One letter from a current or former coach in any sport addressing to the candidate’s sportsmanship.
  • One letter from any adult (no relatives) addressing candidate’s sportsmanship (including, but not limited to coaches associated with any sport).
    • Please do not submit college recommendations that do not pertain to sportsmanship.
    • No recommendation will be accepted from relatives or from officers or directors of Massachusetts Hockey.
  • Letters can be provided in one of two ways:
    • Uploaded to the registration.
    • E-Mail by the person writing the recommendation to Massachusetts Hockey at sportsmanship@mahockey.org
