Mass Hockey Announces New Referee Coordinator John Murray

Massachusetts Hockey is happy to announce that John Murray of Tewksbury, Mass. will be serving as Referee Coordinator for the organization. He has over 30 years of experience as a referee and currently employed as a Vice President of Human Resources and Organization Development.

Murray fills the vacant position of Referee Coordinator to Massachusetts Hockey left open after the retirement of former long-time Referee Coordinator, Dennis Doherty.

“While we will miss Dennis dearly, John comes with a great deal of experience, including his game management and problem-solving skills,” said John Tobin, president of Massachusetts Hockey.

USA Hockey Referee in Chief for Massachusetts Kevin Donovan highly recommends Murray in this new role. “John Murray is going to be a great fit,” said Donovan.

As stated in the Massachusetts Hockey Annual Guide (2018) the referee coordinator is an appointed member of the executive board. Coordinate referee assignments to all State Final sites with the Referee-in-Chief, Referee Supervisors and the State Tournament Coordinator.” (10)

Currently, Murray works as an instructor training other USA Hockey officials in Massachusetts. He is the CORI Officer who handles the background checks for all Massachusetts Officials.

In 1988 Murray picked up the whistle as a USA Hockey referee and the rest is history. He has worked as a referee for the National Ice Hockey Officials Association (NIHOA) and National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) for the past 25 years including in collegiate leagues such as the American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA), Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) and Hockey East Women’s.

Previously, Murray worked as the rink manager for Matthews Arena at Northeastern University. While at Matthews he served as the official timekeeper/announcer and assignor of officials in athletics. Also, He is an official for Eastern Massachusetts Lacrosse Officials Association and Eastern Massachusetts Soccer Officials Association.
