Attorney Maura L. Sheehan Joins the Team

Massachusetts Hockey is happy to announce that Attorney Maura L. Sheehan of Lexington and Salem, Mass. will be serving as general counsel for the organization. Her 23 years of experience includes representing clients in real estate transactions, estate planning, probate, catastrophic personal injury cases, small business matter and sports law.

Sheehan fills the vacant position of general counsel to Massachusetts Hockey left open when former general counsel John L. Tobin was elected president of Massachusetts Hockey. “I am very excited by her acceptance of this position. She has a great deal of hockey experience and knowledge,” said Tobin.

Her sports law practice has included representation of clients in various sports related matters including sponsorship contracts, regional and national television broadcast license agreements, merchandising agreements, individual athlete and on air talent contracts, litigation and public relations management. In 2010, 2012, and 2014 she represented Hockey East in their Frozen Fenway and associated television contracts. Her practice has grown significantly over the past 15 years to include clients such as Women’s Hockey East, Atlantic Hockey, College Hockey, Inc., the American College Hockey Coaches Association and College Hockey America.

As stated in the Massachusetts Hockey Annual Guide (2015) the general counsel is an appointed member of the executive board. Their duties include providing “legal advice to Massachusetts Hockey”, being the “chair of the CORI screening committee”, and the “administer for the physical and sexual abuse policies and their associated rules” (p. 8).

In 1985 Sheehan graduated from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and Northeastern University School of Law in 1993. Upon graduating law school, she spent several years as an associate attorney at Thornton & Early and Stephen J. Kiely and Associates of Boston. She was affiliated with Conway, Crowley and Homer. In 1996 Sheehan established the Law Office of Maura L. Sheehan in Boston and Lexington, Massachusetts. Also, since 1998 Sheehan has been of counsel to Gonthier-Kiely & Associates.

Attorney Sheehan played adult hockey, retiring in 2008. Growing up she worked as a Learn to Skate instructor and skate guard. She resides in Rhode Island with her husband Tim of 33 years and four children.
