FACILITY OF THE MONTH

Edge Sports Center

The Edge Sports Center has long been known as a leader in the Massachusetts rink industry. To accommodate its growing customer base, the Edge recently added one ice sheet and an expanded field complex. Mass Hockey sat down with Edge Sports Center General Manager Scott Fusco to learn more about their new project and the industry as a whole.

MH: What prompted you to undertake this effort to build a new facility in Bedford?

SF: The expansion of the East Coast Wizard hockey program required additional ice and a home base. The program is now at 40 teams and utilizes the majority of the ice in both rinks in the facility.

MH: What are some of the innovative ideas that you were able to implement?

SF: We utilize many energy-saving measures with our ice plant and we have solar on the roof of the facility.

MH: Why did you add the second sheet of ice after starting with just one?

SF: We opened with one ice surface and indoor turf fields at the Edge. We needed additional ice hours for the East Coast Wizard program as well as other rink users. We also needed to provide our indoor turf customers with additional indoor hours and also outdoor turf fields for spring, summer and fall use, so we built an expanded field complex on land adjacent to the ice rinks.

MH: What has the impact of the new facility meant to youth hockey in Bedford and the surrounding area?

SF: We service a large part of the Bedford, Concord, Lexington and surrounding towns. The Edge is a great community-building asset for the area and the athletic teams will continue to benefit due to the development opportunities provided in ice hockey, field hockey, lacrosse and soccer.

MH: What are some of the trends that you are seeing in youth hockey? Any local facilities that will be coming in the near future?

SF: Youth sports are becoming more club-focused (as opposed to town-focused) and home facilities like the Edge Sports Center are becoming the hub of club teams. Having excellent “home” facilities is critical in developing quality hockey programs that are sustainable into the future.
