Massachusetts Hockey is saddened to announce the passing of Dr. Alan Ashare, long-time member of our Board of Directors and dedicated volunteer. “Doc” Ashare was known throughout the hockey world for his passionate advocacy for safety in youth hockey and his desire to make the game safe and enjoyable for all. A specialist in nuclear medicine by trade, Doc used his knowledge and passion to encourage youth hockey leaders, coaches and players to enjoy the game in a safe environment. He was responsible for the creation of the “Head Up, Don’t Duck” program that is used throughout the country today to educate players about neck and spine safety. He was a long-time member and co-chair of SPEC (Safety and Protective Equipment Committee) with USA Hockey and earned Director Emeritus status with the group as well.
