MASSACHUSETTS HOCKEY STATEMENT REGARDING TODAY’S TEMPORARY SHUTDOWN

Massachusetts Hockey is aware of the updated guidance from the Commonwealth issued tonight that has put a two-week stoppage to all youth and recreational hockey in Massachusetts effective at 5:00pm tomorrow (October 23, 2020). While this is not a situation that anyone desires, the Commonwealth feels strongly that the hockey community has contributed to the increase in COVID-19 cases over the past few weeks and that it is appropriate to reassess the guidance as it currently stands.

As we have been throughout this process, we will be working closely with the Governor and his leadership team to create a safe environment for our players and their families. It is our goal to ensure players get back on the ice soon and safely.

While many of the players, families and facilities throughout the state have been following the guidance as expected, there have been situations and areas where the Commonwealth feels compliance with the guidance has not been followed.   Unfortunately, unless we are able to correct these issues, we would anticipate any further shutdown could be significantly longer than the current two weeks. This is related to both the guidance issued as well as cooperation with the contact tracing process.

As we learn more about any updates to the guidance from the Commonwealth, we will be sharing it with the hockey community through our website and social media.

Until the rinks are allowed to reopen, we hope that everyone takes a moment to think about why we play this great game and how our actions can impact others.

For better or worse the hockey community is viewed as one collective group and, unfortunately, the actions of a few can impact the season for the 50,000 Massachusetts players and coaches.

Stay safe and we look forward to getting back to the rinks soon.
