Eight Players from Massachusetts Chosen in 2020 NHL Draft

The 2020 NHL Entry Draft tied the record for the most Massachusetts players selected since 2005 when the draft was reduced to just seven rounds. The eight players selected ties the 2018 draft and is also tied with Minnesota for the most players from one state this year.

This year's NHL Draft came to end on Wednesday, October 7, 2020 after a four-month delay due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 216 selections were made virtually for the first time ever by all 31 teams.

The players chosen in the 2018 NHL Draft from Massachusetts includes Sam Colangelo, Drew Commesso, Ian Moore, Alex Jefferies, Sean Farrell, Ben Meehan, Riley Duran and John Fusco.

ALL of the players selected from Massachusetts have been a part of our CCM High Performance Player Development process and/or the USA Hockey National Player Development camps.

Sam Colangelo is a 6-foot-2, 205-pound right wing from Stoneham. He was selected by the Anaheim Ducks in the 2nd round (No. 36 overall). He is committed to play at Northeastern University.

Drew Commesso is a 6-foot-2, 180-pound goalie from Norwell. He was selected by the Chicago Blackhawks in the 2nd round (No. 46 overall). He is committed to play at Boston University.

Ian Moore is a 6-foot-2, 171-pound defenseman from Concord. He was selected by the Anaheim Ducks in the 3rd round (No. 67 overall). He is committed to play at Harvard University.

Alex Jefferies is a 6-foot-0, 195-pound left wing from Lunenburg. He was selected by the New York Islanders in the 4th round (No. 121 overall). He is committed to play at Merrimack College.

Sean Farrell is a 5-foot-8, 175-pound center from Hopkinton. He was selected by the Montreal Canadiens in the 4th round (No. 124 overall). He is committed to play at Harvard University.

Ben Meehan is a 6-foot-0, 178 pound defenseman from Walpole. He was selected by the Los Angeles Kings in the 5th round (No. 140 overall). He is committed to play at UMass Lowell.

Riley Duran is a 6-foot-1, 174-pound center from Woburn. He was selected by the Boston Bruins in the 6th round (No. 182 overall). He is committed to play at Providence College.

John Fusco is a 5-foot-9, 174-pound center from Westwood. He was selected by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the 7th round (No. 189 overall). He is committed to play at Harvard University.

During the 2019 NHL Draft, five from Massachusetts were chosen: Matthew Boldy, Henry Thrun,  Braden Doyle, Patrick Moynihan and Aidan McDonough.

During the 2018 NHL Draft, eight from Massachusetts were chosenOliver Wahlstrom, Jay O’Brien, Jake Wise, Jordan Harris, Michael Callahan, Liam Gorman, John Leonard and Riley Hughes.

During the 2017 NHL Draft, four from Massachusetts were chosen: Ben Mirageas, Keith Petruzzeli, Jack Rathbone and John “Jack” Adams.

During the 2016 NHL Draft, three Massachusetts players were chosen: Matt Filipe, Casey Fitzgerald and Jake Ryczek.

Notes: The 52 American players drafted represent 21 different states, including California (2), Colorado (1), Connecticut (1), Florida (1), Idaho (1), Illinois (2), Indiana (1), Iowa (1), Massachusetts (8), Michigan (6), Minnesota (8), Missouri (1), Montana (1), New Jersey (1), New York (4), North Dakota (2), Ohio (2), Rhode Island (2), Texas (3), Washington (1) and Wisconsin (3)… A total of 18 players chosen have skated with USA Hockey’s National Team Development Program… A total of 43 drafted have played in the USHL… Of those selected, 30 are slated to play college hockey in 2020-21… Twenty-seven players drafted competed in the 2020 BioSteel All-American Game and 45 have participated in USA Hockey’s national player development camps… Of those drafted, 10 players represented the U.S. in the 2019 World Junior A Challenge… Six players drafted competed for the U.S. in the 2019 Hlinka Gretzky Cup.

Drew Commesso:


Drew Commesso (Norwell) selected by Chicago Blackhawks in the 2020 NHL Draft.

Ian Moore:


Ian Moore (Concord) selected by the New York Islanders in the 2020 NHL Draft.

Alex Jefferies:


Alex Jefferies (Lunenburg) selected by the New York Islanders in the 2020 NHL Draft.

Sean Farrell:


Sean Farrell (Hopkinton) was selected by Montreal Canadiens in 2020 NHL Draft.

Ben Meehan:


Ben Meehan (Walpole) was selected by the Los Angeles Kings in the 2020 NHL Draft.

Riley Duran:


Riley Duran (Woburn) was selected by the Boston Bruins for the 2020 NHL Draft.

John Fusco:


John Fusco (Westwood) was selected by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the 2020 NHL Draft.
