To ALL Massachusetts Hockey Members & Associations/Programs/Clubs:
Effective immediately, Massachusetts Hockey strongly recommends the postponement of all youth hockey activities.
As we are all aware, we are in the midst of a global health crisis the likes of which we have never experienced. As the governing body of youth hockey in Massachusetts and an affiliate of USA Hockey, we applaud and commend those programs and members who have joined us in making the difficult decision to cancel and/or postpone events. We recognize that these are not easy decisions and the short-term impact can be significant. Players have worked all season long to earn the opportunity to compete for state, regional and national championships. Programs have paid for ice time that will go unused. Everyone is missing out on what should be the fun time of the year.
To be clear, with the support of our executive board, Massachusetts Hockey strongly encourages all programs to postpone any future events that may currently be scheduled. We anticipate that our member programs will follow this advice. Those choosing to still run scheduled events do so against the advice of Massachusetts Hockey. It is our hope that more dramatic steps do not need to be taken and that common sense prevails.
This issue is not just related to youth hockey. It is impacting everyone…everywhere. And it is important that everyone plays a role in minimizing the spread of the COVID-19 virus. Schools are closed. Travel bans are in place. Both the World Health Organization and Center for Disease Control have issued significant recommendations designed to keep our population as safe as possible.
We all have difficult choices to make during this time. We encourage all of our members, programs and leadership groups to act in a way that benefits the greater good for all players, coaches and families involved. If we all do our part, we will be able to return to a sense of normalcy soon and continue to enjoy our great sport.
