ADM trains athletes first, hockey players second

Since the first NHL All-Star Game was held at Toronto's Maple Leafs Garden on Oct. 13, 1947, the format has changed a handful of times. In the time leading up to the 2011 NHL All-Star Game presented by Discover in Raleigh, N.C., which will be the 58th since the inaugural, the game has pitted the Stanley Cup champions against a team of all-stars and seen North America oppose the rest of the world. In the years leading up to this one, the game was a competition between the best players from the Eastern and Western conferences.

These changes are among the many that have infused the sport of hockey. But perhaps the most important, the most influential and the most exciting advancement is just beginning to take hold: the NHL's partnership with USA Hockey, particularly the increased support and widespread implementation of the American Development Model (ADM), a new philosophy in age-appropriate athlete development that overturns the traditional model of training for one emphasizing early generalization and late-seeded specialization. In other words, ADM creates athletes first, hockey players second.. more >>

ADM Best Practice Ideas

Colorado Avalanche have posted an article on their website regarding a better structure idea for youth hockey.

Rather than holding Squirt tryouts at the same time as Pee Wee, Bantam and Midget tryouts, the Squirts started a week later around Sept. 7. And rather than dive right into tryouts as usual, the associations focused on skills, drills, and small-area games for approximately five weeks   Read the full article >>

More good news for young athletes:

The United States has 24 NHL teams and more than 307 million people within its borders. With those numbers, the U.S. should be producing a healthy number of highly skilled, physically tough hockey players... more than it is today.

The 2000s have had some positive signs for hockey in the U.S. In the past 11 NHL drafts, six of the overall No. 1 picks were Canadian, two were Russian and three were American (Rick DiPietro, Erik Johnson and Patrick Kane). Team USA's excellent play at the Olympics last February was not a fluke. It was reinforcement that they should not have been such big underdogs. The NHL pool of players born in the U.S. is deeper in quality than Russia, Sweden and every other country but mighty Canada. While lacking elite NHL players, the U.S. has produced plenty ........

The Healthy Meal vs. the Dessert  Excellent Article written by Roger Grillo

In today’s version of youth sports we have a very unhealthy ratio of practice to games. In many youth hockey associations the practice-to-game ratio is 1 to 1 or 2 to 1. To me practice is the healthy meal and the games are the dessert. What would serve our young athletes much better would be a healthier ratio of 3 to 1.
