Clarification of Mass Satellite Program and Mass Hockey Development Programs:
The Mass Satellite Program is a privately run program
that is no longer affiliated with USA or Mass Hockey and does not provide access
to USA Hockey or Mass Hockey development camps. The players from the
tryouts available on this page will be competing for a slot at the Festival.
Players at the Festival will then be chosen
to attend the National Development Camp to represent Massachusetts Hockey. The Cunniff Overnight Camp is the
State version of the Development Camp. There will also be Mass Hockey Day
Camp.

Massachusetts Hockey is please to introduce two new chairs to the Player
Development Committee, Ryan McGrath from Umass Boston and Courtney Kennedy from
Boston College. Both coaches are highly respected in the world of hockey. They
have been added to the committee to take Player Development to the next level.
We look forward to working with both Ryan and Courtney to improve our tryout
process and our development camps.
USA Hockey & Massachusetts Hockey Player Development Camps
After the
1980 Gold medal win, USA Hockey decided the best way of identifying the best
players in the country, was to gather them at camps during the summer along with
the best college coaches in the country. Throughout the years, the camps have
changed, originally two Regional camps, one in the east and one in the west for
U16 & U17 players and then a national camp to pick the National team in
Colorado.
The camps
as they are now, the selected Girls (U14, U15, U16 &U17) and the selected Boys
(U15, U16 &U17) are the product of USA Hockey’s desire to bring together the top
1% of the players at each age level. The camps are USA Hockey’s way of tracking
the development of the players selected to attend from all districts in the
country. Top college and junior coaches help to guide the players throughout
their experience at the camps, as well as opportunities to make the U18 and U16
National teams and be selected for the National Development training Program
teams in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
Massachusetts Hockey originated its player development camp in 1985 at Otis Air
force Base and the Falmouth Arena. The Camp Directors, John Cunniff and Tim
Taylor took it upon themselves to get the camp going in the right direction
towards developing the players’ skills. The Massachusetts Hockey player
development camp, like the USA Hockey Player Development camps, went thru
changes in ages, gender and locations over the years.
The
Massachusetts Hockey John Cunniff Player Development camp, in its current
version, for both Girls and Boys has developed throughout the years. Modeled
after the USA Hockey Development Camps and using the ADM curriculum. The camp
is set up to help those players who attend, with their ability to improve and
develop their individual skills.
Massachusetts Hockey Player Development has a unique opportunity to help players
within its borders to develop their hockey skills. Those players, in the future,
will represent the Massachusetts Hockey Community on their High School, College
and possibly World hockey stage.

Tryout Process
During the
Festival Tryouts and Festival Weekend, the players will be evaluated by
experienced college hockey coaches who have no affiliation with any of
the players trying out. Our goal is to improve the integrity and consistency of the player evaluation
process by using highly qualified and professional coaches
For Open
Tryouts, players will need to register for one of the Open Tryouts being
held throughout Massachusetts. After all of the tryouts are completed,
Massachusetts Hockey will conduct the Festival Weekend. A goalie evaluation
session will take place to further evaluate the goaltenders skills prior to the
Festival for all goalies who attended an Open Tryout. The goalies will then be
selected to the Festival.
During the Festival Weekend, a parent meeting will be conducted by the Head
Evaluator to explain the tryout process and expectations, the USA Hockey Player
Development Camp and the Massachusetts Hockey John Cunniff Player Development
camp, as well as answer any questions.
